Brandy

I wake up to my cell phone ringing. At first I’m not sure what it is. The sound is a bird chirping.

I stumble around in the dark, trying to find where I left the phone.

Then I see the glow of it underneath my sock, right by the window. I grab it.

“Hello?” My voice comes out hoarse. What time is it? It has to be well after midnight.

“Rosie, it’s Brandy. I’m just checking up. How are you doing?” she says. She sounds relaxed. Refreshed.

“Well, I was asleep, but other than that I’m fine,” I say. Then I yawn into the phone so she knows she woke me up.

Is she calling because of Kyle? Is this a trick? Should I confess my sins and maybe then I won’t get into trouble?

“Oh, sorry. The time difference is a killer. I didn’t realize. I just got to work and guess what was sitting on my desk?” she says. I imagine her at her desk, typing on her magical computer. Drinking coffee.

“I don’t know?” I say.

Is it a report? A report of me being at Kyle’s house? Of him holding my hand? What will she say?

Maybe I should just confess.

No. Stay cool. She doesn’t know anything.

If I confess they might have my next soul be a four-year-old boy and his puppy. I wouldn’t like that at all.

“Martin Gables’s file. You got your first soul. That was much faster than a lot of our other Reapers. Congrats,” Brandy says.

Relief floods all over me. I’m in the clear.

“There is one tiny little problem though, Rosie, and that’s why I’m calling,” Brandy says. All of a sudden her tone sounds angry.

Or am I overworrying?

I walk over and flick on the light to my bedroom. Then I sit down on the floor.

Just relax.

Breathe.

No need for panic. Yet.

“What’s the problem?” I ask, trying to sound innocent. Even though I’m not. I’ve held the hand of the living. Martin knew I was a Reaper. What if they add six more souls for me to send back? They can’t do that. It’s not in the contract, is it? Maybe I should have read it.

“Well, the file says you took the dog as well. Dolly the dog. Is this true?” Brandy says.

Shoot. I had forgotten all about the dog.

Martin and his best friend. I couldn’t leave the dog alone in this world.

“I did. He asked me to.” The second the words come out of my mouth I want to reach into the phone and take them back.

Nononono!

“Excuse me?” Brandy says. This time I know her voice is angry.

“I didn’t mean that. It’s just, the dog was so old,” I say, stumbling around on my words. Not sure how to get out of this one.

Good-bye, Dad. I’ll never see you again.

This time for good.

“He found you out?” Brandy says. Now she whispers into the phone. It sounds like a snake hissing on the other end. I bet if she came back to earth she would come back as a python. Just so she could bite my face off.
